Stylish "family" Ford S-Max II

In mid-September 2014, the American company Ford held an official online presentation of the S-Max minivan of the new, second generation, and already next month, visitors to the Paris Auto Show were able to watch the car in reality.

As a result of reincarnation, the one-volume vehicle received a "tightening" of the exterior, a completely redesigned interior, a number of new functions and a thoroughly redrawn technical part.

The appearance of the second generation Ford S-Max is imbued with attractiveness and charisma, and its distinctive feature is a "shark" front end with an evil look of head optics and a "mouth" of a trapezoidal radiator grille "a la Aston Martin". A bold and stately profile with a heavily littered A-pillar and aggressive stern with LED lights and a pair of exhaust pipes give the car a solid and dynamic look.

The "American" one-volume car has a fairly large body size: 4796 mm in length, 1658 mm in height and 1916 mm in width. The wheelbase of the Ford S-Max fits into a 2849 mm gap, but the ground clearance is modest in size - only 128 mm.

The "inner world" of the 2nd generation minivan in catchiness is significantly inferior to the exterior, although it is not deprived of modern solutions: an analog-digital "toolbox", a multifunctional steering wheel and a visually heavy, laconic center console with an 8-inch "TV" and controls for "music" and "climate".

The main advantage of the "American" is a well-organized salon. The seats in the first row are endowed with an anatomical profile and a wide range of settings, and three separate seats with individual adjustments are installed in the rear. Optionally, a two-seater "gallery" is offered for the car, however, only children can sit comfortably on it.

The luggage compartment of the 2nd generation Ford S-Max is 285 liters in the seven-seater and 965 liters in the five-seater configuration. The rear two rows are electrically flush with the floor, increasing the maximum capacity to 2020 liters. In the underground "hold" there is a "defective" spare wheel and a repair kit.

Specifications. The "second" Ford S-Max is available with six powerplant options:

  • The gasoline section includes "direct" four-cylinder engines with 16-valve timing and turbocharging.
    • The base 1.5-liter unit produces 160 "horses" at 6000 rpm and 240 Nm of torque at 1500-4500 rpm.
    • Its "older brother" has a displacement of 2.0 liters, and its output has 240 forces at 5400 rpm and 345 Nm of thrust at 2300-4900 rpm.

    "Duet" with motors form six-speed gearboxes - "mechanics" or "automatic", delivering all the potential to the wheels of the front axle. The family minivan overcomes the sprint up to 100 km / h after 8.4-9.9 seconds, accelerating to a maximum of 200-226 km / h. In the mixed driving mode, the car is enough on average 6.5-7.9 liters of fuel per "hundred", depending on the modification.

  • The "solid-fuel" four-cylinder engine with direct injection and turbocharging is one, but it is available in four boost levels. With a displacement of 2.0 liters, the diesel generates 120, 150, 180 or 210 horsepower at 3500 rpm in all cases and 310, 350, 400 and 450 Nm of torque, respectively. On the "junior" version, the potential peak is realized at 1750-2000 rpm, and on the others - at 2000-2500 rpm.
    Diesel units are combined with a 6-speed "mechanics" or 6-range preselective "robot" PowerShift with two clutches and a front-wheel drive transmission. As an option, the monocab relies on an "intelligent" all-wheel drive system. Maximum minivan gains 183-211 km / h, and the first "hundred" is exchanged in 8.8-13.4 seconds. At the same time, diesel fuel is consumed a little - only 5-5.8 liters in mixed mode.

The second generation Ford S-Max is built on a front-wheel drive CD4 platform with independent suspensions on both axles: McPherson struts at the front and "integral" multi-link design at the rear. The car uses an adaptive steering gear with an electric power steering, which changes the gear ratio depending on the speed, and four-wheel disc brakes with a whole range of modern "chips" - ABS with EBD, Brake Assist and ESP.

Options and prices. In the European market, the 2015 Ford S-Max is sold at a price of 30,150 euros for the basic configuration.
By default, the car is equipped with front and side airbags, an audio system, ABS with EBD, ESP, a dual-zone climate system, a multifunction steering wheel, sports front seats, a start / stop system and many other equipment.
