The first generation Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV with an internal ZJ index made its debut in January 1992 at the Detroit car show, and since then it needs little introduction. Four years later, "American" underwent a planned update that extolled cosmetic changes to the exterior and interior, as well as new equipment. Serial production of the car continued until the fall of 1998, after which its successor entered the market.

The first Jeep Grand Cherokee is a mid-size five-door SUV and has the following exterior body dimensions: 4550 mm long, 1800 mm wide and 1645 mm high. The wheelbase is 2690 mm of the total length, and the clearance under the bottom does not exceed 200 mm. The mass of the machine in the stowed state varies from 1621 to 1769 kg, depending on the modification.

Under the hood of the first generation Grand Cherokee, a wide range of atmospheric gasoline engines was installed:

  • Among them - in-line "six" with a volume of 4.0 liters, issuing from 177 to 190 horsepower and from 285 to 305 Nm of torque, and V-shaped "eights" for 5.1-5.9 liters, the return of which has 211-245 "horses" and 375-454 Nm of peak thrust.
  • Offered for the SUV and four-cylinder 2.5-liter turbocharged diesel, producing 115 horsepower and 278 Nm of capacity.

The motors were combined with a 4-band "automatic", however, on some copies there was also a 5-speed "mechanics".

There were four drive options: rear (rarely found and only on pre-reform cars), full part-time with a front axle plug-in, multi-mode full with a transfer case and permanent full with a viscous coupling in the front axle gearbox.

At the heart of the 1st generation Grand Cherokee is the ZJ platform with a frame body structure. Suspension on an SUV is dependent spring both front and rear with classic, continuous axles. Power steering - hydraulic, brakes - ventilated disc on the front and disc on the rear wheels (on powerful versions - ventilated "in a circle").

The "first" Jeep Grand Cherokee has earned a reputation as a reliable and easy-to-use car, which has in its arsenal a brutal appearance, a roomy interior, good off-road qualities, tenacious brakes and inexpensive maintenance.
The negative sides of the SUV are high fuel consumption, stiff suspension, low sound insulation and low light from the head optics.
